Old Testament Wednesday

Scripture of the Day:

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not acareful to answer thee in this matter.
17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to adeliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.
18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not aserve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

Historical Background:

Following the training and having been proven to be worth servant to the king, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego were tested when the king passed a law requiring that the people worship his own likeness or be cast into a fiery furnace. This is the response of the three to the king when they chose not to obey that law.

Gospel Principles Outlined:

1) Trust that when we do what is right, the Lord will bless us.

2) Always be respectful of others.

3) Even if the outcome is not what we desire, we must always trust the Lord.

4) Never accept wickedness.

5) Stand up for righteousness.

What I Learned Today:

I have received a great deal of comfort from the phase, "but if not." These three understood that trusting the Lord and doing what is right was not always easy and did not always lead us to comfortable circumstance. It must have been difficult to stand before the king who appeared to have the power to command their death. I bet it was tough to see the flames and know the physical consequences of being thrown into the fire and still trust that the Lord would take care of them. I love their example. It is moving to see that the Lord does in fact protect them, "but if not" we still should recognize the power in their example. We must always stand by the Lord. Regardless.

Things I Will Implement:

Trust. Very simple, I will trust that by being as obedient as possible, the Lord will shape my life in the best way that He knows for me. I look forward to seeing what that means. It is going to be fun.
