Learning From the Savior Saturday

Scripture of the Day:

17 And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;
18 And wheresoever he taketh him, he ateareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.
19 He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.
20 And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit atare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
21 And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.
22 And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have acompassion on us, and help us.
23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are apossible to him that bbelieveth.
24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine aunbelief.
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he arebuked the bfoul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.
26 And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.
27 But Jesus took him by the hand, and alifted him up; and he arose.
28 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and afasting.

Historical Background:

Following their experience on the Mount of Transfiguration, the Savior and His disciples are teaching a multitude and are approached by a father requesting the healing of his child. The disciples had previously attempted to heal the child but were unable.

Gospel Principles Outlined:

1) Our ability to use power in the priesthood is strengthened by prayer and fasting.

2) Faith in the Savior will bring healing into our lives.

3) Faith in the Savior includes trusting Him to make up the difference in out shortcomings.

4) We must seek out the Savior and request his aid.

5) The Lord will perform miracles in our lives.

What I Learned Today:

I have always been struck by the father's response in verse 24: "
Lord, I believe; help thou mine aunbelief." How often are we the same in our own lives? When are there times when we are praying for something to happen or take off in our own lives and we are unsure of whether or not we will receive the desired blessings from the Lord? I know that I am quite frequently subject to times when I feel the need to cry out, "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." I am starting to realize more and more that that is just fine to the Savior. He wants us to recognize that we need Him as well as acknowledge to ourselves the times and ways that we fall short. I wish that we trusted ourselves and the Lord more in our lives; we wouldn't have to cry out as the Father did as much as we do. Regardless, when we do doubt, we can still rely on the blessing. We can still hope that it will all work out. And we can still know that the blessings will come, because He will always "help [our] unbelief."

Additional Insights and Hope:

Things I Will Implement:

I am going to be a little easier myself and understand that the Savior's Atonement really does make up the difference. Even in my faith shortfalls. I am going to press forward and have continued hope recognizing the number of blessings that I consistently receive from the Lord.
