Doctrine and Covenants Tuesday

Scripture of the Day:

12 For there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations, who are ablinded by the subtle bcraftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to cdeceive, and who are only kept from the truth because they dknow not where to find it—
13 Therefore, that we should waste and awear out our lives in bringing to light all the bhidden things of darkness, wherein we know them; and they are truly manifest from heaven—
14 These should then be attended to with great aearnestness.
15 Let no man count them as small things; for there is much which lieth in futurity, pertaining to the saints, which depends upon these things.
16 You know, brethren, that a very large ship is abenefited very much by a very small helm in the time of a storm, by being kept workways with the wind and the waves.
17 Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us acheerfully bdo all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the csalvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.

Historical Background:

During the time of great persecution of the Church while in Missouri, the Prophet Joseph Smith was imprisoned in Liberty Jail and suffered deprivation and hardship. While there, Joseph Smith also received great guidance from the Lord about the plan of salvation and the trust that we can have in the Lord during our adversities. This section is a direct revelation regarding the things that the saints were to do regarding the suffering and adversity that they were going through.

Gospel Principles Outlined:

1) The Savior needs us to bring to light the truth so that many who are deceived will be able to see the light of the gospel.

2) Steadiness in adversity brings about the comfort and peace that we need.

3) Be cheerful in adversity.

4) "Waste and wear out [your life]" in missionary work.

5) Don't neglect the "small and simple things."

What I Learned Today:

This is a great scripture about the role of missionary work in helping us overcome adversity. I live the counsel to "waste and wear out our lives" in helping bring to light the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Everything that we do should reflect the gospel and the plan of our Father. Even our work, our school and our socialization can reflect the joy that comes from the gospel. How we deal with adversity and success will help us demonstrate the truth and power of the gospel. As we act with cheerfulness, our burdens will be light and the truth will be made manifest through us. This section is especially powerful given the adversity in which Joseph Smith received it. God knows and loves each of us. He will make great things of our trials if we let Him.

Things I Will Implement:

I am again touched by the power of the invitation to do missionary work that is include with many scriptures on how to deal with adversity. I will continue to implement my plan of prayer and sharing to improve how I engage missionary work in my life.
